Renewable Natural Gas
When waste is buried in landfills, it produces methane gas, which is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Instead of letting that methane escape into the atmosphere, we capture it and turn it into something useful – renewable natural gas. It’s like giving waste a second chance to do some good in the world.
The process starts with collecting the methane gas emitted from the landfill and processing it to remove any impurities. Once the gas is cleaned, it’s compressed and purified into a form of natural gas that can be used for transportation, heating, or even electricity generation.

The RNG produced through the process of anaerobic digestion can also be used by specialized generators that turn the methane into green energy. The energy produced through this process is then made available on the grid for utility companies to distribute to their customers.

By-Products
Producing renewable natural gas and CO2 aren’t the only things we are pioneering at South Hills RNG. We are also developing methods to capitalize on the discarded waste and byproducts produced in the process of transforming waste into RNG. Some of these byproducts include organic compost that is created by removing the fibers from the digestate.
